SUMMARY. 1. The tendency of larvae of Chyranda centralis to mark themselves by adding coloured plastic segments to their cases was used to study instream movements of the species. Plastic strips of different colours were placed at measured distances down a small spring stream and larvae cut pieces and incorporated them in their cases.
2. Over 50% of the marked population moved upstream into cooler water prior to pupation in an exceptionally dry year. The greatest distance moved upstream by a single larva was 56.9m, In a wet year, when daytime stream temperatures were cooler, 11–28% of the marked population moved upstream. Downstream movement occurred in both years late in the fifth instar.
3. Larvae selected yellow in preference to other colours in laboratory tests and they preferred heavy, textured plastic to light, smooth plastic as they neared pupation.
4. Upstream movements, found also in Desmana bethula (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) in the same spring stream, may be an adaptation for avoiding pupation in areas of high temperature, low oxygen concentration, or intermittent flow.  相似文献

Red clover genotypes capable of regenerating plantletsin vitrofromnon-meristem-derived callus are rare. A previous study identifieda pair of near isogenic lines which were derived from a singleseed but differed in regenerative ability. The callus-derivedplants of this clone were highly regenerative when reintroducedto culture whereas the epicotyl-derived plants produced non-regenerativecallus cultures. The objective of the present study was to observemeiotic chromosome pairing and to compare isozyme profiles andferritin gene expression in regenerative and non-regenerativeplants and cultures from the clone. Meiotic cells exhibitednormal homologous chromosome pairing. Starch gel zymograms fromglasshouse-grown regenerative (F49R) and non-regenerative (F49M)plants failed to show somaclonal variation for alcohol dehydrogenase,glutamate dehydrogenase, esterase or peroxidase. Isoelectricfocusing of callus cultures from regenerative and non-regenerativeplants revealed that regeneration was accompanied by a reductionin staining intensity and numbers of peroxidase bands comparedto non-regenerative cultures. A unique cathodic peroxidase band(pI 7.6) was associated with non-regenerative cultures. Abstract The Delmarva fox squirrel (Sciurus niger cinereus) has been listed as endangered by the United States Department of Interior since 1967. A high-priority task for the recovery of this taxon is to determine its current geographic distribution. Toward this end, we have identified a microsatellite locus that unambiguously differentiates Delmarva fox squirrels from eastern gray squirrels (S. carolinensis), which frequently co-occur with Delmarva fox squirrels. Analysis of this marker in noninvasively collected hair samples will allow unequivocal identification of localities occupied by Delmarva fox squirrels with a minimum investment of funds, time, and effort because handling individuals will be unnecessary. This protocol will expedite site review in connection with the Endangered Species Act consultation process.  相似文献

Measurements of the net CO2 flux between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere using the eddy covariance technique have the potential to underpin our interpretation of regional CO2 source–sink patterns, CO2 flux responses to forcings, and predictions of the future terrestrial C balance. Information contained in FLUXNET eddy covariance data has multiple uses for the development and application of global carbon models, including evaluation/validation, calibration, process parameterization, and data assimilation. This paper reviews examples of these uses, compares global estimates of the dynamics of the global carbon cycle, and suggests ways of improving the utility of such data for global carbon modelling. Net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) predicted by different terrestrial biosphere models compares favourably with FLUXNET observations at diurnal and seasonal timescales. However, complete model validation, particularly over the full annual cycle, requires information on the balance between assimilation and decomposition processes, information not readily available for most FLUXNET sites. Site history, when known, can greatly help constrain the model‐data comparison. Flux measurements made over four vegetation types were used to calibrate the land‐surface scheme of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies global climate model, significantly improving simulated climate and demonstrating the utility of diurnal FLUXNET data for climate modelling. Land‐surface temperatures in many regions cool due to higher canopy conductances and latent heat fluxes, and the spatial distribution of CO2 uptake provides a significant additional constraint on the realism of simulated surface fluxes. FLUXNET data are used to calibrate a global production efficiency model (PEM). This model is forced by satellite‐measured absorbed radiation and suggests that global net primary production (NPP) increased 6.2% over 1982–1999. Good agreement is found between global trends in NPP estimated by the PEM and a dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM), and between the DGVM and estimates of global NEE derived from a global inversion of atmospheric CO2 measurements. Combining the PEM, DGVM, and inversion results suggests that CO2 fertilization is playing a major role in current increases in NPP, with lesser impacts from increasing N deposition and growing season length. Both the PEM and the inversion identify the Amazon basin as a key region for the current net terrestrial CO2 uptake (i.e. 33% of global NEE), as well as its interannual variability. The inversion's global NEE estimate of −1.2 Pg [C] yr−1 for 1982–1995 is compatible with the PEM‐ and DGVM‐predicted trends in NPP. There is, thus, a convergence in understanding derived from process‐based models, remote‐sensing‐based observations, and inversion of atmospheric data. Future advances in field measurement techniques, including eddy covariance (particularly concerning the problem of night‐time fluxes in dense canopies and of advection or flow distortion over complex terrain), will result in improved constraints on land‐atmosphere CO2 fluxes and the rigorous attribution of mechanisms to the current terrestrial net CO2 uptake and its spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Global ecosystem models play a fundamental role in linking information derived from FLUXNET measurements to atmospheric CO2 variability. A number of recommendations concerning FLUXNET data are made, including a request for more comprehensive site data (particularly historical information), more measurements in undisturbed ecosystems, and the systematic provision of error estimates. The greatest value of current FLUXNET data for global carbon cycle modelling is in evaluating process representations, rather than in providing an unbiased estimate of net CO2 exchange.  相似文献

Microbes may play a key role in the mobilization of arsenic present in elevated concentrations within the aquifers extensively exploited for irrigation and drinking water in West Bengal, Bangladesh, and in other regions of South-East Asia. Microcosm experiments using Cambodian sediments (which are also representative of other similar reducing aquifers containing arsenic-rich waters) show that arsenic release and iron reduction are microbially mediated and demonstrate that the type of organic matter present, not necessarily the total abundance of organic matter, is important in controlling the rate and magnitude of microbially mediated arsenic release from these aquifer sediments. The possible role of naturally occurring petroleum in stimulating this process is also demonstrated. In addition to acting as an electron donor, certain types of organic matter may accelerate arsenic release by acting as an electron shuttle, indicating a dual role for organic matter in the process. The results also suggest that the fine-grained sediment regions of these aquifers are particularly vulnerable to accelerated arsenic release following the introduction of labile organic carbon.  相似文献

As anaerobic microbial metabolism can have a major impact on radionuclide speciation and mobility in the subsurface, the solubility of uranium, technetium and radium was determined in microcosms prepared from sediments adjacent to the Drigg low-level radioactive waste storage site (UK). Both uranium (as U(VI);     ) and Tc (as Tc(VII);     ) were removed from groundwater concurrently with microbial Fe(III) reduction, presumably through reduction to insoluble U(IV) and Tc(IV), respectively, while Ra (Ra2+) that had rapidly sorbed onto mineral surfaces was not released following Fe(III) reduction. Biogenic Fe(II) minerals in reduced Drigg sediments were unable to reduce U(VI) abiotically but could reduce Tc(VII). Following addition of the oxidant nitrate to the reduced sediments, uranium was remobilized and released into solution, whereas technetium remained associated with an insoluble phase. A close relative of Pseudomonas stutzeri dominated the microbial communities under denitrifying conditions, reducing nitrate to nitrite in the microcosms, which was able to reoxidize Fe(II) and U(IV), with release of the latter into solution as U(VI). These data suggest that microbial Fe(III) reduction in the far-field at Drigg has the potential to decrease the migration of some radionuclides in the subsurface, and the potential for reoxidation and remobilization by nitrate, a common contaminant in nuclear waste streams, is radionuclide-specific.  相似文献

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina drew attention to commonplace landscape markers that create for a community a sense of place— that connection between people and places crucial to a sense of corporate and individual identity and heritage. There is a legal context for sense of place within extant federal preservation legislation. Nevertheless, many such markers with special meanings for residents have been overlooked in federal documentation, the cornerstone of which is the National Register of Historic Places. Grassroots efforts and national media coverage have helped forge a niche for sense of place within the recovery plans and policy emerging in the affected region. However, it is unclear whether this will carry over into practice. In terms of long-term policy shifts, remedying the shortcomings highlighted by Katrina may require changes to the National Historic Preservation Act and its associated guidelines and regulations, or it may entail a new approach altogether.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The vertical distribution within the substrate of three lotic mayflies (Rhithrogena sp., Paraleptophlebia sp. and Baetis tricaudalus Dodds) was examined in laboratory streams to determine if diel patterns of vertical movement across substrate surfaces existed and whether light intensity, temperature, substrate composition or food availability influenced the observed movement patterns.
2. Rhithrogena sp. and B. tricaudatus exhibited significant diel movement from lower substrate surfaces during the day to upper surfaces at night, although >64% of B. tricaudalus occupied the upper surfaces throughout the 24 h period. In contrast, Parakplophlebia sp. larvae did not change their vertical distribution over the 24 h period.
3. The proportion of mayflies occupying substrate surfaces was influenced by the amount of upper and lower surface area available in the substrate and, possibly, crevice sizes associated with lower surfaces.
4. The movement of Rhiihrogena sp. from lower surfaces during the day to the upper surfaces during the night was influenced by changes in light intensity, but not by changes in food availability or water temperature.
5. The diel patterns of vertical movement exhibited by lotic mayflies in this investigation raise the possibility that at least some biotic interactions may vary over a diel cycle. These could include competitive interactions or temporal cycling of prey availability to predators.  相似文献
